Events generate $487‚000 donation to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals

This was another very successful year for Credit Union Miracle Day‚ with three beautiful days‚ three amazing race events‚ $487‚000 donated to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals across the country‚ and a record number of legislators united in their support for our cause. We greatly appreciate your support‚ your time and your donations. These are truly world-class events that unite credit unions to support a world-class cause‚ and provide community and Hill awareness of the good that credit unions do.

Legislators from all 50 states support cause

Setting an historical precedent‚ 231 Members of Congress representing all 50 states signed on to be Honorary Race Chairs (HRCs) of this year’s race‚ including 40 senators‚ Majority Leader Harry Reid and Speaker John A. Boehner. Click here to see the list of HRCs. Please thank your senators and representatives today for their distinguished support.

Online donations top $113‚000!

Thank you to members‚ employees‚ runners‚ their families and friends who donated $113‚208 to their local Children‚s Miracle Network Hospitals using our online fundraising system. The top fundraiser for the Cherry Blossom was Holly Fearing of CUNA Mutual Group; the top fundraiser for the SacTown was Teresa Freeborn‚ President & CEO of Xceed Financial CU. Donations go back to the hospital where the individual lives.

Sponsors learn about innovative care at the Hospital

Credit union sponsors enjoyed a private tour of Children’s National Medical Center on April 4 to learn more about how their donations are benefiting the kids. The tour included the Hematology and Oncology‚ Pain Medicine Care and Diabetes Care Complexes. Those who came for the tour brought new toys for the kids to enjoy.

Hill press conference and packet pick up for 900 staffers

Congressional and U.S. Senate FCUs hosted the annual press conference and packet pick up for the Capitol Hill Competition on April 3 in the Capitol Visitors Center. Credit union staff distributed the runners’ numbers and T-shirts to the steady stream of 900 participants. On hand for the press conference and check presentation were six Members of Congress‚ lead partner PSCU’s EVP‚ Fredda McDonald‚ the USA Women’s 10 Mile Champion Janet Bawcom‚ and representatives from CUNA‚ CUNA Mutual Group‚ NAFCU‚ Champion Kids and their family‚ and Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

Race day highlights

It was a crisp, spring morning and the cherry blossoms were beginning to bloom on the tidal basin as 15‚000 runners competed in the 42nd Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run on April 6. There were also 2‚141 finishers in the 5K walk/run and over 400 kids enjoyed the ½ mile fun run. For the first time‚ the Cherry Blossom Run hosted both the USA Track & Field Men’s and Women’s Ten Mile Championships‚ Presented by America’s Credit Unions.

“This was a spectacular race with great results for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals‚” said Charlie Mallon‚ President/CEO of Congressional FCU, and chair of the credit union race committee. “It was an amazing demonstration of the spirit of cooperation from all of our supporting credit unions and business partners.”

Secretary of the Department of the Interior Sally Jewell greeted credit union officials in the sponsor tent‚ welcomed the runners to the National Mall and sounded the horn to start the elite women’s and men’s races. Credit union officials presented the $487‚000 check before the race began.

There were 25 credit union teams competing for the Credit Union Cup. The first place team was “SDO NASA” from NASA Federal Credit Union.

Mamitu Daska of Ethiopia was the fastest overall female runner at 52:05. The top male runner was Stephen Sambu of Kenya at 45:29. The 2014 USA Women’s 10 Mile Championship was won by Janet Bawcom of Flagstaff, Arizona‚ who crossed the finish line at 52:12‚ breaking her American single sex record of 53:28 from last year. Christo Landry of Ann Arbor‚ Michigan‚ placed sixth overall in the men’s competition with a time of 46:41to win the 2014 USA Men’s 10 Mile Championship title.

Over 640 volunteers from 33 credit unions and six partner organizations helped at the race Health and Fitness Expo at the National Building Museum‚ and on race day as course marshals and at water stops‚ food stations‚ baggage check and other vital stations.

Hospital press conference and fun activity set the stage

The Credit Union SacTown Ten-Mile Run events kicked off with a news conference and a fun activity at UC Davis Children’s Hospital on April 4 in Sacramento, CA. At the event‚ Diana Dykstra‚ President & CEO of the California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues, and John Pamer‚ President & CEO of Diablo Valley FCU presented CMN with a check representing the $487,000 donated to children’s hospitals nationwide. Golden 1 CU provided its live mascot for the children to enjoy.

“For the kids and their families‚ this race provides a life-changing experience‚” said Pamer‚ who is also chair of the SacTown race committee. “Every day for them—as well as the doctors‚ nurses‚ and staff at Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals—is like a ten-mile run as they complete their medical journey. Credit unions are honored to be a part of it.”

Dykstra said: “We’re proud to be sponsors‚ as credit unions’ mission is to change people’s lives. We’re honored to once again join the Sacramento Running Association to host such a fabulous race for the kids‚ and to spotlight what credit unions are all about.”

Race day highlights

The third annual CU SacTown Ten-Mile Run—which included a three-person relay and Kids’ Miracle Mile—attracted more than 1‚200 runners‚ including defending champions Tesfaye Alemayehu and Olympian Kim Conley. Folsom’s Shadrack Biwott and West Sacramento’s Kim Conley took winning individual titles at the race‚ which also serves as USA Track & Field‚s Pacific Association 10-Mile Championship.

The race, which started and finished at the state Capitol and featured a $15‚000 purse‚ also included more than 500 credit union employees and members as runners. Another 170 credit union staff and members worked the event as volunteers.

Biwott had to overcome two untied shoes and a short recovery time from a half-marathon to pull away from two-time defending champion Tesfaye Alemayehu in the final 100 yards to win. Biwott‚ 29‚ finished in 47:58‚ just ahead of Antioch̻s Alemayehu (48:02) and Eugene‚s Craig Leon (49:19).

His teammate on the Sacramento Running Association’s Elite Team‚ Conley came down from high-altitude training with enough energy to pull away from Auburn’s Jane Kibii in the final three miles to win the women’s title‚ finishing in 54:44.

Eight-year-old Cadence Stamper‚ who was treated at UC Davis Children’s Hospital for a month after suffering a stroke last summer‚ finished the kids’ Miracle Mile. She has been slowly recovering the use of the left side of her body and has just recently been able to run again.

Congressman Ami Bera‚ who represents California’s 7th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives‚ served as the race’s official starter and also completed the 10-mile course. “We’re one of the fittest cities in the country‚” Bera said. “It was great to be a part of this.”

Congratulations also to Travis CU for winning the first-ever T-Shirt Design Contest! The credit union’s navy-colored t-shirts featuring the slogan “Teaming up to Create Miracles” received the most votes in the contest.

TEN-MILE RUN NOTES

Freedom Run held in Wiesbaden Army Garrison‚ Germany

The 3rd Annual German Credit Union Freedom Ten Mile Run, sponsored by Andrews FCU‚ kicked off at 10 a.m. on Saturday‚ April 12 with perfect weather at the Wiesbaden Army Garrison. The event included a 10 mile run‚ a 5K run/walk and a ½ mile kids’ run and had the best turnout ever — 372-plus registered participants.

“It is an honor to sponsor the 3rd Annual Freedom Run‚” said Jim Hayes‚ President & CEO of Andrews FCU. “We take pride in supporting our service members and their families overseas.”

A special thanks to Arty Arteaga‚ President & CEO of the Defense Credit Union Council‚ for donating $10 for each runner‚ totaling $3‚720 to benefit Children‚s Miracle Network Hospitals.

Volunteers from the USO‚ Better Opportunity for Single Service Members and Andrews FCU lent their support. Morale Welfare and Recreation provided banners and signage throughout the community as well as radio ads prior to the run. All runners received a Freedom Run t-shirt‚ racer bibs and military challenge coins courtesy of Andrews FCU. The base has a population of about 16‚500 service members and their families.

The top male and female overall finishers for the 10 mile run were:

  • Women’s Overall Top Finisher: Ann Parthemore with a time of 1:06:02.5
  • Men’s Overall Top Finisher: Christopher Jacobsen with a time of 1:04:07.9
