Friendly Capitol Hill Competition Highlights Credit Union Impact

April 12, 2024

It’s a Washington tradition that has been bringing people together and highlighting credit unions’ community impact for more than a quarter century. The Capitol Hill Competition stands as a cornerstone event within the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile Run. Through the generosity of credit unions and business partners, $550,000 was raised for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals during the 2024 race, bringing the total contribution to $11.5 million since 2002.

This year, over 850 Congressional staffers formed 113 teams to compete for the coveted Congressional Cup. With team names like “The Cardin Cruisers” (Sen. Ben Cardin), “The Burger Kings” (Sen. Angus King) and “Murphy’s Lawmakers” (Sen. Chris Murphy) this Capitol Hill tradition is all about having fun. And winning… it’s DC after all!

“Markey on Your Left,” a team representing Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey’s office, finished first and is the unofficial winner of the coveted Congressional Cup. The team gets the privilege of displaying the trophy in their congressional office for one year.

Members of Congress also did their part, with 245 serving as Honorary Chairs of the Race, including the following members of the Maryland and DC delegations:

Maryland
Sen. Ben Cardin
Sen. Chris Van Hollen
Rep. Andy Harris (1st)
Rep. C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger (2nd)
Rep. John Sarbanes (3rd)
Rep. Glenn Ivey (4th)
Rep. David Trone (6th)
Rep. Kweisi Mfume (7th)
Rep. Jamie Raskin (8th)

District of Columbia
Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton

The Capitol Hill Competition is sponsored by Congressional FCU, U.S. Senate FCU, and America’s Credit Unions.
